The Rise of Video-First Content

08/10/2025

It has become evident that video has become an integral part of social media marketing (and just social media in general). Over the past few years, platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and even YouTube Shorts have shifted the way we consume content, and the way in which content creators and brands connect with their audiences.

Keeping Up With Attention Spans
Our attention spans are now shorter than ever before. People form an impression within seconds of seeing something and whether a viewer stays or drops off a videos is often decided within the first few seconds. Today’s audiences seek quicker dopamine hits when scrolling social media, and video content is quick to capture attention. Static Images and long captions definitely still have a place, however video offers a different way tell a story, capture emotion and hold interest.

Short-form storytelling: Reels and TikTok
Short-form video has taken over social media and how creators communicate and engage with their audiences online. TikTok lead with a swipeable, endless scrollable video feed, and Instagram followed in their steps with Reels, which is now a major driver of reach and discoverability. These formats are addictive because they’re fast and tailored with algorithms for each individual user. This means that for creators and brands, bite-sized content is now crucial for visibility.

Aesthetics Are Just As Important
Audiences are drawn to video content that’s visually appealing, easy to digest and appears authentic. Clean visuals, thoughtful editing and creative hooks can make all the difference between scrolling past and a share. Aesthetic doesn’t necessarily mean overly-polished, however it does mean being intentional with how your content looks and feels.

Putting It Into Practice

  • lean into story telling: even in 15 seconds, a narrative will drive attention. Don’t forget the hook!
  • Prioritise aesthetics: think about colour palettes, lighting and editing styles that align with you.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment: the platforms reward consistency and creativity. Test trends, transitions and ideas and see what resonates with your audience.
  • Meet your audience where they spend their time: if your community is highly engaged with reels, focus your energy there.

This Trend Isn’t Slowing Down
This shift in the social media marketing space isn’t slowing down. If anything, it’s becoming standard for how audiences discover and engage with creators. Embracing this shift is essential for influencers and brands alike, not just to stay relevant, but to stand out. But also, always remember that different platforms have different content expectations from viewers! So don’t be changing all your YouTube video’s to short form, but know where it has its place! 💌
